In plain words

When the One is standing with me as my helper, I have nothing to truly dread.

Even the shadow of my greatest fears cannot come near, because I am not facing them alone.

With the One as your helper, even your biggest fears can't come near — you're not facing them alone.
The deeper layer

With the One as your helper, even your biggest fears cannot come near.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Jisahi sahaa-ee gobid mayraa — those whose helper is my Lord. Sahaa-ee means helper. Gobid is a name for the One who looks after the whole world.

The verse says even jam cannot come near. Jam is the messenger of death in old stories. The point is total safety beside a helper who cannot be beaten. Think of walking home in the dark holding a parent's hand. The dark is still there, but you are not facing it alone. For anyone scared of something bigger than themselves, this is the heart of the shabad's comfort.

A Question to Sit With

What feels less frightening the moment you remember you don't have to face it by yourself?
