In the Frightening Illness, You Were Held

The Supreme Lord God has granted His Grace. ||1||

In plain words

When someone was very sick, the Giver of joy watched over them and kept them safe.

The Supreme One reached toward them with kindness, and they were held through the hardest part.

In a frightening illness, there was watching-over and kindness, and the sick one was held through.
The deeper layer

The literal recalls a specific rescue — someone saved from a dangerous illness by grace (the source names smallpox, a much-feared sickness of that time); it does not say who the person was or how old. The point for a young reader is gentle and universal: in a frightening illness, there was protection, watching-over, kindness. Bihaaree means the Giver of joy or delight; kirpaa dhaaree — "grace was extended." We keep the tenderness — someone frightening-ill was cared for and came through — and let the specific disease stay quietly in the background. Illness is met here with mercy, not dread.

A Question to Sit With

Who has watched over you and kept you safe when you were sick or scared?
