the Lord of the World abides in the heart forever. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the true teacher grows kind toward me, something opens. The One who holds the whole world settles into my heart and stays there — not for a moment, but for good.

When the teacher's kindness opens you, the One settles in for good.
The deeper layer

When the teacher's kindness opens your heart, the One settles in and stays.

Satgur pooraa is the perfect true teacher. Kirpaal means kind and merciful. Gupaal is the One who looks after the whole world. When the teacher becomes kind, gupaal comes to live in the heart forever.

Notice the order. The teacher's kindness comes first. The One settling in comes next. You do not push the One in by force. You open up, and the One was always ready to come.

It is like opening the curtains in the morning. You do not make the sunlight. You just open the window, and it was already waiting outside.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone being kind to you helped you feel calm and at home inside?
