The One Who Gives Stays to Care for It

ਆਪੇ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ॥
aapay daataa aap partipaal.
He Himself is the Giver; He Himself is the Cherisher.
ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੪॥੧੦੫॥੧੭੪॥
nit nit naanak raam naam samaal. ||4||105||174||
Continually, continuously, O Nanak, dwell upon the Name of the Lord. ||4||105||174||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is the Giver, and the One is also the Cherisher who tends what has been given. So again and again, day after day, let me hold the Name of the One close and keep it alive in my heart.

The One who gives is the same One who stays to care for what was given.
The deeper layer

The closing line. Daataa (Giver) and partipaal (Cherisher, the one who nourishes and raises up) are named together: the same source that gives also stays to care for what it gave. Nit nit — "continually, again and again" — is the rhythm of remembrance, not a burden but a steady returning. Raam naam samaal means to hold, tend, keep the Name safe in one's heart, the way you'd cradle something precious.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you were given that someone also helped you take care of and grow?
