Meditating on the Lord, I have found eternal peace.
ਮਇਆ ਕਰੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ma-i-aa karee pooran har raa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Sovereign Lord, the Perfect King, has shown His Mercy to me. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Keeping the One in mind, I have found a peace that lasts — not a mood that comes and goes, but something steady. The complete One, the true sovereign, has poured out kindness on me.

The peace that comes from keeping the One in mind is the kind that stays.
The deeper layer

Keeping the One in mind brings a peace that stays.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Raam ravat means keeping the One in mind and enjoying that closeness. It brings sad hee sukh, a peace that lasts. It is not a mood that comes and goes. It is steady.

Think of the difference between a sugar rush and a good night's sleep. One is gone in an hour. The other keeps you going all day.

Ma-i-aa karee means the One showed kindness. Pooran har raa-i-aa calls the One the complete and perfect King. This King is not someone far away to be afraid of. The One is whole and kind, and is the very source of the peace just found.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that gives you a calm that lasts, not just a quick good feeling?
