Verse 3 of 4

Love Brings a Peace Where Doubt Can't Settle

ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
har sang raatay dookh na laagai.
One who is attuned to the Lord, does not suffer in pain.
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥
har sang raataa an-din jaagai.
One who is attuned to the Lord, remains awake and aware, night and day.
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਸੈ ॥
har sang raataa sahj ghar vasai.
One who is attuned to the Lord, dwells in the home of intuitive peace.
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਨਸੈ ॥੩॥
har sang raatay bharam bha-o nasai. ||3||
One who is attuned to the Lord, sees his doubts and fears run away. ||3||

In plain words

Colored through with the One, pain does not cling.

The heart stays awake and aware, through day and night.

It comes to live in a natural, easy peace.

And confusion and fear simply run off and are gone.

Love for the One brings an easy, natural peace where doubt and fear can't settle.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan describes the calm inner weather of a heart colored with the One.

Dookh na laagai: pain does not stick. An-din jaagai: awake night and day. This is the alertness of a heart that is present, not asleep to life. Sahj ghar vasai: living in the home of sahj, the natural, easy peace of a soul that has stopped fighting. Bharam bha-o nasai: doubt and fear run away.

Think of a lake on a still morning. There is no wind, and you can see right to the bottom. This verse is a picture of the settled inner life that love makes.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like when you're so at ease that worries just don't stick?
