Verse 3 of 4

Kindness Keeps You Safe and Drops the Old Weight

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੇ ਜਨ ਰਾਖੇ ॥
kar kirpaa apnay jan raakhay.
The Lord has granted His Grace, and saved His humble servant.
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਲਾਥੇ ॥੩॥
janam janam kay kilbikh laathay. ||3||
The sinful mistakes of so many incarnations have been washed away. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In kindness, the One has kept safe the one who trusts.

The weight of old mistakes, gathered over so much of life, has fallen away.

Kindness both keeps you safe and lets the old weight fall away.
The deeper layer

Kindness keeps you safe and lets the old weight fall away.

Kar kirpaa apnay jan raakhay — in kirpaa, mercy, the One protects the one who trusts. It echoes the parent's care from the first verse.

Janam janam kay kilbikh laathay — the kilbikh, the wrongs gathered janam janam, birth after birth, have come off. The heart of this line is relief. A heavy burden is set down. Picture taking off a backpack full of rocks after a long walk.

The line joins two gifts. The One both shelters and unburdens.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel forgiven, so a past mistake stops weighing you down?
