You Can't Measure the One, but It Gathers You

ਕਿਆ ਸੁਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਮਲਾ ਕਵਨ ਬਿਧੀ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
ki-aa sukh tayray sammlaa kavan biDhee beechaar.
What comforts of Yours can I dwell upon? How can I contemplate You?
ਸਰਣਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਦਾਸ ਹਿਤ ਊਚੇ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੩॥
saran samaa-ee daas hit oochay agam apaar. ||3||
You lovingly absorb Your slaves into Your Sanctuary, O Lofty, Inaccessible and Infinite Lord. ||3||

In plain words

What comforts of Yours could I ever fully take in? By what way could my small mind hold You? And yet — You lovingly gather those who trust You into Your own shelter, O high and boundless One, beyond all reach.

You can't measure the One with your mind — but the One gathers you in with love.
The deeper layer

Ki-aa sukh tayray sammlaa — "which of your joys can I hold?" — the wonder that the One is too vast to grasp. Kavan bidhee beechaar — by what method could I contemplate you? The answer is not a technique but a welcome: saran samaa-ee daas hit — the One, out of love (hit), absorbs the trusting into refuge. Oochay agam apaar — high, unreachable, infinite. The gap the mind can't cross, love crosses from the other side.

A Question to Sit With

What is something too big to fully understand that still welcomes you in?
