Those Who Thirst Most Help Everyone Else Across

ਜਗਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਸੇਈ ਆਏ ਜੋ ਜਨ ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
jagat uDhaaran say-ee aa-ay jo jan daras pi-aasaa.
They have come to save the world - those humble beings who thirst for His Blessed Vision.
ਉਨ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੈ ਸੋ ਤਰਿਆ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸਾ ॥੨॥
un kee saran parai so tari-aa satsang pooran aasaa. ||2||
Those who seek their Sanctuary are carried across; in the Society of the Saints, their hopes are fulfilled. ||2||

In plain words

Some souls seem to come into the world just to lift others up — the ones who thirst to see the One.

Whoever takes shelter with them is carried across life's hardest waters, and in that good company, their deepest hopes come true.

People who thirst most deeply for what is good often become the ones who help everyone else across.
The deeper layer

Jagat udhaaran say-ee aa-ay — 'they came to uplift the world' — jo jan daras pi-aasaa, those who thirst for the vision of the One. Their thirst becomes a spring for others. Un kee saran parai so tari-aa — whoever takes their shelter is 'carried across' (the bhavjal, the world-ocean); satsang pooran aasaa — in true company, hope is fulfilled. This is Guru Arjan's devotional praise of the God-loving as bridges, not a general claim about a class of people and their purpose: for young readers it can suggest that devotion may overflow into care for everyone who draws near.

A Question to Sit With

Who has helped you through a hard stretch simply by letting you stay close to them?
