One Lamp Lit Within Clears a Whole Dark Room

Darkness is dispelled from within that body, in which the Divine Light of the Guru's Shabad shines.

The noose of doubt is cut away from those who place their faith in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||

In plain words

The darkness lifts from inside a person the moment the Teacher's Word lights up like a lamp within.

And the tangled net of doubt gets cut away for anyone who leans, with trust, on the company of the wise.

One lamp lit inside you can clear away a whole roomful of darkness.
The deeper layer

Andhkaar miti-o tih tan tay — 'darkness is erased from that body' — gur sabad deepak pargaasaa, when the Teacher's Word shines like a deepak, a lamp. Light-in-darkness is the classic image of understanding replacing confusion (recall Guru = the one who leads from darkness to light). Bharam kee jaalee taa kee kaatee — the net of bharam (doubt, the confusion that blocks clear seeing) is cut, jaa ka-o saadhsangat bisvaasaa — for the one who trusts the company of the wise. Light comes, and the tangling net falls away.

A Question to Sit With

Think of a time something finally 'clicked' and made sense — how did that feel compared to being confused?
