Death, Seen Rightly, Is a Wedding Day

ਸੰਬਤਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਤੇਲੁ ॥

The day of my wedding is pre-ordained. Come - let's gather together and pour the oil over the threshold.

dayh sajan aaseesrhee-aa ji-o hovai saahib si-o mayl. ||3||
My friends, give me your blessings, that I may merge with my Lord and Master. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The day of my wedding is already set. Come, gather together and pour the oil over the doorway. Bless me, my friends, so that I may join with my One.

Death, seen rightly, is a wedding day -- the soul going to meet its Beloved.
The deeper layer

The wedding is death -- reframed as the soul-bride's union with the Beloved. The oil poured over the threshold is wedding language in the verse, here marking the soul's departure as a marriage, not a tragedy. The soul asks the Sangat for blessings -- the same prayer one gives a bride leaving home. Death is the wedding day.

A Question to Sit With

How might it change things to think of an ending as a kind of homecoming?
