Verse 2 of 5

Sanctuary Is Cool Relief from a Burning Fire

ਮਹਾ ਕਸਟ ਕਾਟੈ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਾਰੇ ॥
mahaa kasat kaatai khin bheetar rasnaa naam chitaaray.
He removes the most terrible pains in an instant, if the tongue repeats His Name.
ਸੀਤਲ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੂਖ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣੀ ਜਲਤੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
seetal saaNt sookh har sarnee jaltee agan nivaaray. ||1||
In the Lord's Sanctuary there is soothing coolness, peace and tranquility. He has extinguished the burning fire. ||1||

In plain words

Even the heaviest ache can ease in a single moment when the Name rises to your lips.

Step into that shelter, and something cool and calm settles over you. It is a soothing peace, like cool water poured on a burning heat until the burning quiets and stops.

In sanctuary the burning is quieted — cool, calm, at ease.
The deeper layer

In the One's shelter, even a burning pain can cool down.

Mahaa kasat kaatai khin bheetar — the worst distress is cut away in an instant, when the tongue remembers the Name. Then come words you can almost feel: seetal, cool; calm; and sookh, ease. That is what the One's shelter is like.

The verse says the "burning fire," jaltee agan, is put out. Today we can also read it as a mind on fire with wanting or worry. It is like running a burned finger under cool water. The sting fades.

This is Raag Gauree at its most healing. It does not promise that pain never comes. It says there is a shelter where the burning quiets down.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel hot with worry or upset, what cools you down?
