Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 206
Verse 2 of 5

Not by Effort, but by Great Good Fortune

ਅਵਰ ਜਤਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
avar jatan nahee paa-ee-ai.
He is not obtained by any other efforts.
ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੧॥
vadai bhaag har Dhi-aa-ee-ai. ||1||
By great good fortune, meditate on the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This isn't something you can grab through busywork or extra effort. It comes the way real luck comes — as a gift you didn't manufacture. And there it is, right in your reach: with that good fortune, simply turn your mind to the Oneness.

Some things don't come by trying harder — this one comes as great good fortune.
The deeper layer

Avar jatan nahee paa-ee-ai — "not obtained by other efforts (jatan)." Again the pauri deflates the machinery of self-effort. The verse names remembrance instead as a matter of vadai bhaag ("great good fortune"), and leaves that word as it stands; in a contemporary pastoral reading, such fortune may be experienced as becoming receptive to grace. The doing that remains is the simplest: har dhi-aa-ee-ai, turn the mind toward the One.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you can't force to happen, only make yourself ready for?
