The oldest and most honored writings, the great scriptures people have treasured for ages, all say the same thing.
The one who lives close to the Oneness stands among the highest. Not high in rank over others, but lifted up, whole, at peace.
The old scriptures agree: the one who lives near the One is lifted high.
Bayd puraan simrit bhanay — the Vedas, the Puraanas, and the Simritees say it. These are the old holy books of the Hindu tradition. Guru Arjan names them with respect. He calls them in as witnesses who agree with him. The texts of another tradition are honored here, never brushed aside.
What do they all say? The jan, the devotee, is ooch biraajit — seated high. This is not being high above other people. It is being lifted up inside, whatever your job or your place in the world.
Think of three friends who grew up in different towns. They all tell you the same thing about a good person. When many old voices agree, it is worth listening.
What is a piece of old wisdom you've heard from more than one place — a sign it might be really true?
