Hard Things Come but No Longer Swallow You

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੀਐ ॥ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਦੂਖਿ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੀਐ ॥੨॥
sant parsaad har jaapee-ai. so jan dookh na vi-aapee-ai. ||2||
That humble being, who meditates on the Lord, by the Grace of the Saints, is not afflicted with pain. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

With the kindness of good and wise company, remembering the Oneness becomes real. And the one who lives in that remembrance is not overwhelmed by suffering. Hard things may still come, but they no longer swallow the person whole.

Hard things may still come, but they no longer swallow you whole.
The deeper layer

Sant parsaad har jaapee-ai — "by the grace of the holy (sant), the One is remembered." The promise, so jan dookh na vi-aapee-ai, is precise: pain does not vi-aapai — does not pervade, saturate, take over. This is an important nuance the project keeps: it does not claim the devotee never suffers, only that suffering no longer fills the whole horizon. There is always a part of the heart it can't reach.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you keep a calm corner inside, even when something hard is happening?
