In plain words

When you meet the teacher, you meet the One -- and it is the One who brings you together with itself. The One knows all its own ways. By the flow of its will, it joins to itself those who come to recognize the Word.

Meeting the teacher is how you meet the One -- and it is the One who does the joining.
The deeper layer

This one says that meeting the Guru is how you meet the One.

Guru Amar Das opens his Gauree songs with a theme he returns to again and again. Gur mili-ai har maylaa ho-ee — meeting the Guru, we meet the One. The Guru is the doorway. Think of a friend who opens the door and says, "Come in, everyone is waiting for you."

But this meeting is not earned. Aapay mayl milaavai so-ee — the One Himself brings us together. It happens by Hukam, the flow of the One's will, for those who come to recognize the Shabad, the Guru's word. The Guru is the way in, yet the first step always comes from grace, the One's free gift.

A Question to Sit With

Who has helped open a door for you that you could not have opened alone?
