Verse 3 of 5

When Work Fits Goodness, Your Days Become a Song

ਕਾਮੁ ਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਭਾਵਾ ॥
kaam karee jay thaakur bhaavaa.
I do that work which pleases my Lord and Master.
ਗੀਤ ਚਰਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਾ ॥੨॥
geet charit parabh kay gun gaavaa. ||2||
I sing the songs of God's glory, and His wondrous play. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I want to do the kind of work that pleases my Great One — to live in a way that fits with goodness. And so I sing about the wonders of the Oneness, the marvelous, playful ways it moves through the world. My days become a kind of song.

When your work fits with goodness, your ordinary days become a kind of song.
The deeper layer

Kaam karee jay thaakur bhaavaa — "I do work that pleases the Master." The aim isn't blind obedience; it's aligning one's daily doing with the good (a version of hukam, living with the flow rather than against it). Geet charit prabh kay gun gaavaa — singing of the charit, the "wondrous play" of the Oneness in creation. Life lived in tune with the good naturally becomes celebratory: work and song stop being opposites.

A Question to Sit With

What work makes you feel like you're living in tune with something good?
