This Joy Is a Gift That Colors You Through

ਓ‍ੁਹੀ ਪੀਓ ਓ‍ੁਹੀ ਖੀਓ ਗੁਰਹਿ ਦੀਓ ਦਾਨੁ ਕੀਓ ॥
ohee pee-o ohee khee-o gureh dee-o daan kee-o.
I drink it in - I am drunk with it. The Guru has given it to me in charity.
ਉਆਹੂ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤੋ ॥੧॥
u-aahoo si-o man raato. ||1||
My mind is drenched with it. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

That very love is what I drink in, and I am glowing with it — the teaching gave it to me freely, as a gift. My whole mind is soaked through with it, colored all the way down.

This joy is a gift received, and it colors you all the way through.
The deeper layer

Ohee pee-o ohee kheeo — "that is what I drink, that is what I glow with." The pauri leans into the metaphor of a sweet drink freely given (gureh dee-o daan kee-o — "the Guru gave it as charity"). The key word is daan, a gift: this joy is not something earned or manufactured but received, exactly as grace is always received. Man raato — "the mind is dyed" — is the image of color soaking all the way through cloth, not just painted on the surface.

A Question to Sit With

What is the best gift you've ever received that money couldn't buy?
