A Life That Never Tastes the One Goes Bland

jala-o ih jihvaa doojai bhaa-ay.
Burn this tongue, which loves duality,
har ras na chaakhai feekaa aalaa-ay.
which does not taste the sublime essence of the Lord, and which utters insipid words.
bin boojhay tan man feekaa ho-ay.
Without understanding, the body and mind become tasteless and insipid.
bin naavai dukhee-aa chali-aa ro-ay. ||2||
Without the Name, the miserable ones depart crying out in pain. ||2||

In plain words

Let it burn away -- this tongue that loves division, that never tastes the One's sweetness and speaks only flat, flavorless words. Without real understanding, body and mind go bland. Without the Name, people leave this life crying out in pain.

A life that never tastes the One goes flavorless -- words, body, and mind all bland.
The deeper layer

The strongest expression yet of Har Ras: the tongue that loves duality cannot taste the One's essence, so its words are insipid, flavorless. The diagnosis is sensory -- a life without the One has no taste. Compare the pandit who reads but never drinks.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between words that have "flavor" and words that fall flat?
