Love It, and You Think of It With Every Breath

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਮਾਝ ॥

Gauree, Fifth Mehl, Maajh:
ਆਉ ਹਮਾਰੈ ਰਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜੀਉ ॥

Come to me, O my Beloved Lord.

Night and day, with each and every breath, I think of You.

O Saints, give Him this message; I fall at Your Feet.

In plain words

Come to me, my Beloved One. Night and day, with every single breath, I think of You. O good and holy ones, carry my message to the Beloved — I lay myself at those feet. Without You, how could I ever cross safely through?

When you truly love something, you think of it with every breath and long to be near it.
The deeper layer

This is a love-song of longing. Day and night, with every breath, the singer misses the Beloved.

It is a chhant, a song of longing, and each line ends with jee-o, a tender word like "dear one." Gurbani often speaks to the One the way a lover speaks to someone they miss. Aa-o hamaarai raam pi-aaray — come to me, my beloved Raam, my dear One.

Rain dinas saas saas chitaaray — night and day, breath by breath, I remember You. That is love that never stops. Then the singer asks the sant, the good and holy people, to carry a message. Connection to the One often comes through good company.

Tudh bin kit bidh taree-ai — without You, how can I cross? It is not fear. It is the sweet helplessness of deep love. Think of a child at the airport window, waiting for a grandparent's plane to land. Every minute feels long, because the love is so big.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what do you miss so much that you think of them without even trying?
