A Priceless Life Can Slip Past Unlived

ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਪਨੋ ਤੈ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥

You have wasted the precious jewel of this human life; you do not know the Way of the Lord of the Universe.

You have not been absorbed in the Lord's Feet, even for an instant. Your life has passed away in vain! ||2||

In plain words

It's easy to let the priceless jewel of this life slip through your fingers without ever coming to know the deep way of things.

Not even a moment spent resting in that Presence — and so the days can pass by empty.

A priceless life can slip past unlived if we never pause to rest in what's deepest.
The deeper layer

This one says a precious life can slip by without being truly lived.

Ratan janam apno tai haari-o — you have lost the jewel of your life, as if losing it in a game. Gurbani often praises maanas janam, being born human, as priceless. This line echoes that.

Nimakh na leen — not resting in the One even for an instant. That is the ache here. Picture a kid who spends a whole day at the beach staring at a screen. The sea was right there.

The regret is wistful, not a harsh verdict. It is meant to make you want to turn toward the One, not to feel hopeless.

A Question to Sit With

If today were a small treasure, what's one moment in it you'd want to actually stop and notice?
