Turn Toward the Name, the Way to Fearless Dignity

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਨਰੁ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
kaho naanak so-ee nar sukhee-aa raam naam gun gaavai.
Says Nanak, that man is happy, who sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name.
ਅਉਰ ਸਗਲ ਜਗੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਪਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥੮॥
a-or sagal jag maa-i-aa mohi-aa nirbhai pad nahee paavai. ||3||8||
All the rest of the world is enticed by Maya; they do not obtain the state of fearless dignity. ||3||8||

In plain words

Here is who is truly happy: the one who sings the wonders of the Name.

So much of the world stays caught up in Maya's glitter. It never quite reaches that fearless, dignified peace.

Real happiness and fearless dignity lie along the way the shabad offers: turning toward the song of the Name.
The deeper layer

This one says real happiness belongs to the one who sings of the Name.

So-ee nar sukhee-aa — that person is happy, the one who sings the Name's praises. The close points to the good news, to what sets us free.

The verse says most of the world is caught by maa-i-aa, the glitter of passing things. Caught like that, people miss nirbhai pad, the state of fearless dignity. The shabad keeps its hand held out. The Name is offered as the path to that fearless peace. It is an invitation, not a promise.

Nirbhai, fearless, echoes nirbhau in the Mool Mantar, the opening words of the Guru Granth Sahib. It means a life free of fear. Think of a kid who knows they are loved at home. They can walk into a new school without fear.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to move through a hard day without being ruled by fear?
