Understanding Cools the Fires of Endless Wanting

ਨੀਲ ਅਨੀਲ ਅਗਨਿ ਇਕ ਠਾਈ ॥
neel aneel agan ik thaa-ee.
There are billions, countless billions of fires of desire at the seat of the mind.
ਜਲਿ ਨਿਵਰੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
jal nivree gur boojh bujhaa-ee.
They are extinguished only with the water of understanding, imparted by the Guru.
ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਲੀਆ ਰਹਸਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ॥੩॥
man day lee-aa rahas gun gaa-ee. ||3||
Offering my mind, I have attained it, and I joyfully sing His Glorious Praises. ||3||

In plain words

There can seem to be countless, endless fires of wanting burning at the center of the mind.

They are quieted only by the cool water of real understanding, poured by the teacher.

Giving my mind fully, I received it — and now I sing the wonders with joy.

The fires of endless wanting are cooled by the water of real understanding — and giving your whole mind, you receive.
The deeper layer

Neel aneel agan — billions, uncountable, of the fire of craving (trisnaa) at the mind's seat. The cooling image is lovely: jal nivree — extinguished by water, the boojh (understanding) the gur imparts. The exchange in the last line is the whole path in miniature: man day lee-aa — give the mind fully, receive everything, and rahas gun gaaee — sing with delight. Giving, not grabbing, is how you receive.

A Question to Sit With

When you're burning with wanting something, what cools it down for you?
