Piling Up Breeds Worry; Holding the One Brings Peace

ਸੰਪਉ ਸੰਚੀ ਭਏ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

They gather wealth, but only evil comes from it.

Pleasure and pain stand in the doorway.

Intuitive peace comes by meditating on the Lord, within the heart. ||5||

In plain words

People pile up wealth, and somehow it just breeds more trouble.

Delight and sorrow stand waiting at the door, taking turns.

But a quiet, natural peace comes to the one who holds the One in the heart.

Piling up things just breeds more worry; steady peace comes to the one who holds the One in the heart.
The deeper layer

This one says piling up riches breeds worry, but keeping the One in your heart brings steady peace.

Sampa-o sanchee bha-ay vikaar — gathering wealth brings vikaar, trouble. There is more to guard and more to fear.

Harakh sok ubhay darvaar — joy and sorrow stand at the door, taking turns. That is the seesaw of a life built on getting. Think of a kid with a huge pile of new toys who spends the day worried someone will take them.

The other way is offered calmly. Sukh sehjay jap ridai muraar — sahaj, natural ease, comes to the one who keeps the One in the heart. It is steady ground underneath the seesaw.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever gotten more of something and found it brought more worry, not less?
