Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When grace looks your way, it draws you into union.
Good qualities gather in you, and the teaching quietly burns away the not-so-good.
Facing toward the teaching, you come into the true treasure — the Name.
This one says grace draws you close, and the teaching gently burns away your faults.
Nadar karay taa mayl milaa-ay — when the One looks with nadar, a glance of grace, the One draws you into union. Grace is received, not earned.
Gun sangrahi a-ugan sabad jalaa-ay — good qualities gather, and faults are burned away by the sabad, the Guru's Word. Change comes through the light of the teaching, not by punishing yourself.
Gurmukh naam padaarath paa-ay — the gurmukh, the one who faces the teaching, gains the padaarath, the real treasure, of the Name. Think of the sun coming out and melting the frost off a window. Nobody has to scrape it. Change here is grace and gathering, not beating the faults out.
What helps your good qualities grow — being scolded for your faults, or being encouraged toward what's best in you?
