Verse 4 of 10

One Light Shines in Earth, Sky, and Every Person

ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨ ਨਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਦੋਇ ॥
Dharan gagan nah daykh-a-u do-ay.
In the earth and in the sky, I do not see any second.
ਨਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਬਾਈ ਲੋਇ ॥੩॥
naaree purakh sabaa-ee lo-ay. ||3||
Among all the women and the men, His Light is shining. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I look at the earth beneath me and the sky above me, and I cannot find a second one anywhere. In every woman and every man, in all of it, the same Light is shining.

Look at earth, sky, every person — one Light shines in all of it.
The deeper layer

Look anywhere, at the earth, the sky, or any person, and the same Light is shining.

Guru Nanak takes a big idea and puts it where a child can see it. Dharan gagan nah daykh-a-u do-ay — in the earth and the sky, I do not see a second.

Naaree purakh sabaa-ee lo-ay — in women and in men, in everyone, the Light shines. He names both on purpose. Everyone is included, and women are honored. This wide welcome is very much Guru Nanak's way.

Think of one sun shining through many windows. Each window is a different shape, but the light is the same.

A Question to Sit With

Where is the easiest place for you to actually see that “one Light” — in nature, or in people?
