Verse 5 of 9

Fill With Awe and Smaller Fears Loosen

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਜੋਗੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
satgur sayvay so jogee ho-ay.
Those who serve the True Guru are the Yogis.
ਭੈ ਰਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋਇ ॥
bhai rach rahai so nirbha-o ho-ay.
Those who remain immersed in the Fear of God become fearless.
ਜੈਸਾ ਸੇਵੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥
jaisaa sayvai taiso ho-ay. ||4||
They become just like the One they serve. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever serves the teaching becomes a true seeker. Whoever stays wrapped in reverent awe becomes truly unafraid. In the end you become like the very thing you serve.

Fill yourself with reverent awe of the One, and smaller fears begin to loosen their hold.
The deeper layer

Satgur sayvay — serving the true Guru makes one a real seeker. The beautiful paradox: bhai rach rahai so nirbhau ho-ay — the one absorbed in reverent awe (bhau) becomes fearless (nirbhau). Awe of the One is offered as the path toward fearlessness, and readers may find smaller fears gradually easing. Jaisaa sayvai taiso ho-ay — you become like what you serve.

A Question to Sit With

Has being filled with wonder ever made a smaller worry seem to shrink?
