Verse 8 of 9

Even a King's Commands Are Empty Without the Word

ਖਾਨੁ ਮਲੂਕੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
khaan malook kahaava-o raajaa.
He may be called an emperor, a lord, and a king;
ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੂੜੇ ਹੈ ਪਾਜਾ ॥
abay tabay koorhay hai paajaa.
he may give orders - "Do this now, do this then" - but this is a false display.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਸਵਰਸਿ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੭॥
bin gur sabad na savras kaajaa. ||7||
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, his works are not accomplished. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I might be called emperor, lord, king — barking orders, “do this now, do that then” — yet all of that is only a false front. Without the living Word of the teaching, nothing I set out to do truly comes right.

Even a king’s commands are an empty front without the living Word.
The deeper layer

Even a king's commands are empty without the Guru's Word.

Khaan malook kahaava-o raajaa — I may be called emperor, lord, and king. Abay tabay koorhay hai paajaa — "do this now, do that then!" But it is a false show. Koorh means false. Picture a kid in a paper crown, ordering everyone around at recess. It looks grand for a minute.

Bin gur sabad na savras kaajaa — without the Guru's Word, nothing truly comes right. Even the highest power in the world is false without the teaching.

A Question to Sit With

Does bossing people around make someone important? What does?
