ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

Such are the humble devotees of the Lord.

har gun gaa-ay milai mal Dho-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and their pollution is washed away. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

This is what a true lover of the One is like. Singing the One’s praises, they meet the One, and everything that clouded the heart is gently washed clean.

Singing the One’s praises gently washes the heart clean.
The deeper layer

A true lover of the One sings, and the singing makes the heart clean.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Aisaa raam bhagat jan ho-ee — this is what a devotee is like. Har gun gaa-ay milai mal dho-ee — singing the One's praises, they meet the One, and the dirt is washed away. Mal means dirt, like a film that clouds the heart.

Think of a foggy bathroom mirror. Wipe it, and your face shows up clear again. Singing praise is more than saying words. It is a washing, and every song leaves the heart a little brighter.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that leaves your heart feeling clean and light afterward?
