Turning the Word Over Lifts You Clear

ਊਂਧੋ ਕਵਲੁ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
ooNDho kaval sagal sansaarai.
The heart-lotus of the entire universe is upside-down.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਰਜਾਰੈ ॥
durmat agan jagat parjaarai.
The fire of evil-mindedness is burning up the world.
ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੨॥
so ubrai gur sabad beechaarai. ||2||
They alone are saved, who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||

In plain words

So much of the world has its heart turned upside-down, and a restless, burning kind of thinking scorches everyone caught in it. The one who turns the living Word over in their heart is lifted clear of it.

When the heart turns upside-down, restless thinking scorches; turning the Word over lifts you clear.
The deeper layer

When hearts turn away from the One, the world starts to burn with bad thinking. Thinking deeply about the Guru's Word lifts you out.

OoNdho kaval sagal sansaarai — the heart-lotus of the whole world is upside-down. A kaval is a lotus flower. A lotus that faces the sun opens wide. One turned upside-down stays closed, facing away from the One.

Durmat agan jagat parjaarai — the fire of durmat burns up the world. Durmat means bent, twisted thinking. Picture a group chat where one mean message sparks another, until everyone is upset. That restless heat spreads fast.

So ubrai gur sabad beechaarai — the one who reflects on the Guru's Shabad, the living Word, is lifted clear. There is always a way out, and reflection is the way.

A Question to Sit With

When your thoughts get “burning” and restless, what cools them down?
