The Pull of More Carries You Far From Peace

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਅਗਰ ਕਪੂਰਿ ॥
cho-aa chandan agar kapoor.
The smell of musk, sandalwood and camphor,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
maa-i-aa magan param pad door.
and the intoxication of Maya, takes one far away from the state of supreme dignity.
ਨਾਮਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
naam bisaari-ai sabh koorho koor. ||2||
Forgetting the Naam, one becomes the most false of all the false. ||2||

In plain words

The scent of musk and sandalwood and camphor, the pull of getting more and more — these quietly carry me far from the highest, most settled place. Let the Name slip away, and everything I chase turns out to be less real than it looked.

Fragrance and the pull of more carry you far from peace; without the Name, it all turns out less real than it looked.
The deeper layer

Lovely smells and the pull of "more" can quietly carry the mind far from its true home.

Cho-aa chandan agar kapoor — musk, sandalwood, fragrant woods and camphor. These were the costly perfumes of Guru Nanak's day. Maa-i-aa magan means being dizzy with maya, the hunger for getting more. Param pad door — the highest, most settled place drifts far away.

Naam bisaari-ai sabh koorho koor — forget the Name, and everything is koorh, false, less real than it looked. Think of a new toy that is thrilling for a week and then sits forgotten in a drawer.

Pleasures for the senses and the urge to collect more pull the mind away from where it truly belongs.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that looked really important until you stepped back from it?
