Verse 4 of 9

Thrones Feed the Wanting; the Name Comes to Who Reaches

ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
nayjay vaajay takhat salaam.
Lances and swords, marching bands, thrones and the salutes of others
ਅਧਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਮੁ ॥
aDhkee tarisnaa vi-aapai kaam.
only increase his desire; he is engrossed in sexual desire.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਚੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੩॥
bin har jaachay bhagat na naam. ||3||
Without seeking the Lord, neither devotional worship nor the Naam are obtained. ||3||

In plain words

Lances and marching bands, a throne, everyone bowing and saluting: all of it just feeds the wanting and the restlessness.

Without truly reaching for the One, real devotion and the Name never arrive.

Thrones and salutes only feed the wanting; the Name comes only to the one who reaches for it.
The deeper layer

Power and fame only make the wanting bigger; the Name comes to those who humbly ask for it.

Nayjay vaajay takhat salaam — lances, marching bands, a throne, and people saluting. These are the signs of great power. Yet they only stir up trisnaa, craving, and kaam, the hungry pull of desire. Think of chasing likes online. Each one feels good for a moment, and then you want ten more.

Bin har jaachay bhagat na naam — without jaachay, asking and reaching for the One, neither bhagat, loving devotion, nor the Name will come.

Here is the turn. These gifts cannot be piled up like trophies or status. They come when you humbly ask.

A Question to Sit With

Does being admired ever actually fill you up? What does?
