Verse 8 of 10

This Way Has Carried Across All Who Sang

ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਉਣੁ ਕਉਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਤਾਰਿਆ ॥
in biDh ka-un ka-un nahee taari-aa.
In this way, who - who has not been saved?
ਹਰਿ ਜਸਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥
har jas sant bhagat nistaari-aa.
The Lord's Praises have saved His Saints and devotees.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਏ ਹਮ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਰਿਆ ॥੭॥
parabh paa-ay ham avar na bhaari-aa. ||7||
I have found God - I am not searching for any other. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In this way — who, who has not been carried across? Singing the glories of the One has ferried the lovers and the good-hearted safely over. I have found the One, and I am not searching anywhere else.

This way has carried across everyone who sang the One's glories — and the search can finally rest.
The deeper layer

This way of singing the One's praise has carried across everyone who walked it.

In bidh ka-un ka-un nahee taari-aa — in this way, who has not been carried across? It is a question that throws the doors wide open. It welcomes everyone who sings the One's glories.

Har jas is praise of the One. It has nistaari-aa, ferried across, the sant bhagat, the loving and devoted.

The finish is quiet and sure: parabh paa-ay ham avar na bhaari-aa — I have found the One; I search for no other. Think of a hiker who finally reaches the top and sits down to take in the view. After all the seeking, the seeker rests.

That wide first line matters. Guru Nanak offers a wide welcome, like a gate standing open.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to stop searching for something because you have finally found it?
