Old Patterns Rise and Fall Till Wonder Lifts the Dark

ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਅਧ ਊਰਧੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
kirat pa-i-aa aDh oorDhee bin gi-aan beechaaraa.
According to the karma of past actions, people descend to the depths or rise to the heights, unless they contemplate spiritual wisdom.
ਬਿਨੁ ਉਪਮਾ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥੩॥
bin upmaa jagdees kee binsai na anDhi-aaraa. ||3||
Without the Praises of the Lord of the Universe, the darkness is not dispelled. ||3||

In plain words

Carried along by old patterns, people rise high or sink low, so long as they never pause to reflect on deeper wisdom. And without turning, in wonder, toward the One who holds the whole world, the inner darkness simply does not lift.

Old patterns carry you up and down until reflection and wonder finally lift the inner dark.
The deeper layer

Kirat pa-i-aa — the momentum of past actions, karma, which children know: patterns we set in motion carry us adh oordhee, down and up, high and low. The key word is bin gian beechaaraa — without reflecting on wisdom, the wheel just turns. The remedy in line two is upmaa jagdees — the praise, the grateful wonder, toward the "Lord of the universe": without that light, andhiaaraa, the darkness, does not clear. Not effort alone but reflection and wonder lift the fog.

A Question to Sit With

What is a pattern or habit of yours that keeps repeating until you actually stop and think about it?
