When we face only ourselves and forget the One, we wander onto rough, confusing paths.
We forget the Name and fill the empty space with lots of doing — rituals and busywork.
The heart stays divided, half here and half chasing something else. It feels like being tossed on a deep and stormy sea.
This one says that a divided heart feels like being tossed at sea.
Manmukh means a person facing only themselves. Agi-aan means not-knowing. Manmukh agi-aan kumaarag paa-ay — in not-knowing, the self-facing person takes the wrong road.
Har naam bisaari-aa baho karam drirh-aa-ay — they forget the Name and set up many rituals in its place. This is the old warning about outer ritual taking the place of the inner heart. It is aimed at ritual that fills the space where the Name belongs, not at any one faith. The same warning fits anyone. It is like decorating a lunchbox beautifully and forgetting to put lunch inside.
Bhavjal doobay doojai bhaa-ay — they drown in the world-ocean, in doojai bhaa-ay, the love of "two-ness." That means a heart split in two, half here and half chasing something else. The stormy sea is a picture of how that feels. It is not a punishment.
Have you ever stayed super busy to avoid feeling something? What was underneath the busyness?
