Verse 6 of 9

Turn to the Teaching and Fear Gives Way to Song

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
gurmukh jamkaal nayrh na aavai.
The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥
ha-umai doojaa sabad jalaavai.
Through the Word of the Shabad, they burn away their ego and duality.
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
naamay raatay har gun gaavai. ||5||
Attuned to the Name, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||

In plain words

Turn toward the teaching, and the old fear of the ending cannot even come near you.

Through the Word, the "me-first" voice and the divided heart quietly burn away.

Colored through and through with the Name, you find yourself singing the wonder of the One.

Turn toward the teaching and the fear of ending quietly gives way to song.
The deeper layer

This one says that when you turn to the teaching, fear gives way to song.

Gurmukh jamkaal nayrh na aavai — for the gurmukh, the one facing the Guru, death does not even come near. Read gently, this is freedom from the fear of the ending. It is not a magic shield.

Ha-umai doojaa sabad jalaavai — the Word burns away ego and "two-ness." Haumai is the me-first feeling. "Two-ness" is the divided heart.

Naamay raatay har gun gaavai — dyed in the Name, they sing the praises of the One. Being dyed is a favorite picture in Gurbani. Think of a T-shirt soaked in dye, colored all the way through, not just painted on top. When the Name soaks in like that, singing comes out on its own.

That turn, from fear to song, is the gift of this verse.

A Question to Sit With

What helps a big fear feel smaller — and turns your heart back toward what you love?
