Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 262
Verse 8 of 9

As the Me-First Voice Fades, an Inner Music Sounds

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
satguroo sayvay so fal paa-ay.
Those who serve the True Guru are blessed with fruitful rewards.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
hirdai naam vichahu aap gavaa-ay.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides in their hearts; selfishness and conceit depart from within them.
ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਏ ॥੭॥
anhad banee sabad vajaa-ay. ||7||
The unstruck melody of the Shabad vibrates for them. ||7||

In plain words

Learn from the true teacher and the fruit really comes.

The Name settles into your heart, and the "me-first" voice fades from the inside out.

A music with no player — a melody that was always sounding — begins to be heard within you.

As the Name settles in and the "me-first" voice fades, an inner music you never noticed begins to be heard.
The deeper layer

As the proud "me-first" voice fades, a quiet inner music begins.

Satguroo sayvay so fal paa-ay — whoever serves the true Guru receives the fal, the fruit. Hirdai naam vichahu aap gavaa-ay — the Name comes into the heart, and aap, the "me-first" self, leaves from within. The two move together, one coming in and one going out. It is like pouring clean water into a muddy glass until it runs clear.

Then comes the wonder. Anhad banee sabad vajaa-ay — the anhad music plays. Anhad means "unstruck," a music no instrument makes. It is always sounding under all our noise, and now it is heard. This is a promise of what listening opens.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever gone so quiet inside that you noticed something you'd never heard before?
