The Word Is a Gift That Holds the Racing Mind Still

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
satgur daataa sabad sunaa-ay.
The True Guru, The Giver, preaches the Shabad.
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
Dhaavat raakhai thaak rahaa-ay.
He controls, and restrains, and holds still the wandering mind.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
pooray gur tay sojhee paa-ay. ||7||
Understanding is obtained through the Perfect Guru. ||7||

In plain words

The true teacher is a Giver: the Word is offered freely. And that Word does something wonderful for a racing mind — it gently gathers the runner and holds it still. From a Perfect teacher, real understanding comes at last.

The Word is a free gift that gently gathers a racing mind and holds it still.
The deeper layer

This one says the Word is a free gift that holds a racing mind still.

Satgur daataa sabad sunaa-ay — the true Guru is the daataa, the Giver. The Word is given freely, not sold or earned.

Its gift is for the Dhaavat mind, the mind that runs and races. Raakhai thaak rahaa-ay — it holds the mind back and keeps it still, gathering all the scattered attention. It is the same thaak, the stilling, that people who meditate know.

Think of a puppy racing around the yard until someone kind scoops it up, and it settles in their arms. Pooray gur tay sojhee paa-ay — from the Perfect Guru comes sojhee, real understanding.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your racing mind slow down and settle when it won't stop spinning?
