Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 264
Verse 9 of 9

Even Receiving the Name Is a Gift

ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jis naam day-ay so-ee jan paa-ay.
They alone receive the Naam, unto whom it is given.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
gurmukh maylay aap gavaa-ay.
The Gurmukhs shed their ego, and merge with the Lord.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
hirdai saachaa naam vasaa-ay.
The True Name abides within their hearts.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੮॥੭॥
naanak sehjay saach samaa-ay. ||8||7||
O Nanak, they are intuitively absorbed in the True Lord. ||8||7||

In plain words

Only the one it is given to receives the Name — and even that receiving is a gift. The teaching-facing heart sheds its "me-first" voice and merges with the One. The True Name comes to live inside, and easily, naturally, that heart dissolves into the truth.

Even receiving the Name is a gift — take it in, shed the "me-first" voice, and dissolve easily into the truth.
The deeper layer

Even receiving the Name is a gift.

Jis naam day-ay so-ee jan paa-ay — the one the Name is given to receives it. Receiving is not an achievement. It is a present you open.

Gurmukh maylay aap gavaa-ay — the one who faces the Guru lets go of aap, the me-first self, and joins with the One. Hirdai saachaa naam vasaa-ay — the True Name comes to live in the heart.

Sehjay saach samaa-ay — easily, with sahaj, natural calm, the heart melts into the True One. Think of a sugar cube in warm tea. It does not fight. It just dissolves.

Here the whole shabad comes full circle, from the priceless Name at the start to this easy melting in. Guru Amar Das signs it with the name Nanak.

A Question to Sit With

What's something wonderful in your life that came as a gift rather than something you earned?
