Reverent Awe Heals the Restless Mind

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 3.
Gauree, Third Mehl:
ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਭੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
man hee man savaari-aa bhai sahj subhaa-ay.
The mind has intuitively healed itself, through the Fear of God.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
sabad man rangi-aa liv laa-ay.
The mind is attuned to the Word of the Shabad; it is lovingly attuned to the Lord.
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
nij ghar vasi-aa parabh kee rajaa-ay. ||1||
It abides within its own home, in harmony with the Lord's Will. ||1||

In plain words

The mind can heal itself, all on its own, when reverent awe settles over it — that hushed wonder before something vast and holy. Colored by the Word, its love tunes to the One. Then it comes to rest in its own true home, moving in step with the flow of existence.

Reverent awe can heal a restless mind, settling it into its own true home.
The deeper layer

When awe fills the mind, the mind heals itself.

Man hee man savaari-aa bhai sahj subhaa-ay — the mind heals itself, gently and naturally, through bhai. Bhai here is not being scared. It is reverent awe: the hushed wonder you feel before something vast and holy. Awe is a key note all through Raag Gauree. Here it works like medicine. Think of standing by the ocean at night. Your busy thoughts go quiet on their own.

Sabad man rangi-aa — the mind is dyed by the Word. Rang means color, like cloth soaking up dye. Colored this way, the mind's love tunes to the One.

Nij ghar vasi-aa parabh kee rajaa-ay — it lives in its nij ghar, its own true home. It moves in step with the rajaa-ay, the Will, the flow of existence. So awe settles the mind back into the home where it belongs.

A Question to Sit With

When has a feeling of awe — at the night sky, the ocean, something vast — quieted your busy mind all by itself?
