Learn From the Teacher and Pride Deflates

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਜਾਇ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
satgur sayvi-ai jaa-ay abhimaan.
Serving the True Guru, egotistical pride departs,
ਗੋਵਿਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
govid paa-ee-ai gunee niDhaan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and the Lord of the Universe, the Treasure of Excellence, is obtained. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Learn from the true teacher, and the puffed-up, prideful "me" quietly deflates. And what you find in its place is the One of all the worlds — the very treasure of everything good.

Learn from the true teacher and prideful self-importance quietly deflates, leaving room for the One.
The deeper layer

Learn from the true teacher, and pride shrinks away.

This is the rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. Satgur sayvi-ai jaa-ay abhimaan — serving and learning from the True Guru, abhimaan leaves. Abhimaan is proud self-importance, the puffed-up "me."

Notice how gentle this is. Pride is not attacked. It just goes flat by itself near the teacher, like a balloon slowly letting out its air.

Govid paa-ee-ai gunee niDhaan — and you find Govid, the One. The One is the gunee niDhaan, the treasure-house of every good quality. Emptied of pride, filled with the One. The two happen together.

A Question to Sit With

What happens to your heart when you finally let go of needing to be the important one?
