In plain words

The ones who serve the true teacher become beautiful — they let the grime of the "me-first" voice wash off, and it lifts. Colored through by the Word, they turn spotless and clear, walking gladly in step with the teacher's way.

Serving the teacher, the grime of the "me-first" voice washes off and a natural beauty shines through.
The deeper layer

Serving the Guru washes off the grime of ego and leaves a person beautiful.

Satgur sayvan so sohnay — those who serve the true Guru are beautiful. Sohnay means beautiful, the kind of beauty that shines out of a clear heart. Ha-umai mail gavaa-ay — they wash off the mail, the grime, of ha-umai, the me-first feeling. This grime is ordinary, like dust on a window. It is not a stain to be ashamed of.

Sabad ratay say nirmalay — dyed in the Shabad, the Word, they become nirmal, spotless. Chaleh satgur bhaa-ay — they walk gladly in step with the true Guru's will.

Think of cleaning a dusty window. The light was always outside. Now it pours in. Serving, cleaning, and shining are all one movement.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how someone at peace inside seems to glow a little on the outside? What is that?
