Pretending and Grabbing Tie You in Knots

ਮਨ ਕਰਹਲਾ ਤੂੰ ਮੀਤੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਤਜਾਇ ॥
man karhalaa tooN meet mayraa pakhand lobh tajaa-ay.
O camel-like mind, you are my friend; abandon hypocrisy and greed.
ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਲੋਭੀ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
pakhand lobhee maaree-ai jam dand day-ay sajaa-ay. ||6||
The hypocritical and the greedy are struck down; the Messenger of Death punishes them with his club. ||6||

In plain words

O camel-mind, you are my friend — so let go of pretending and grasping. Putting on a false face and grabbing for more only ties you in knots and wears you down. Set them down, and you walk lighter.

Pretending and grabbing for more only tie you in knots — set them down and you walk lighter.
The deeper layer

Man karhalaa too meet mayraa — the mind addressed as meet, friend: the whole song treats the restless mind not as an enemy to crush but as a beloved friend to coax. Pakhand lobh tajaay — let go of pakhand (pretending, hypocrisy) and lobh (grabbing/greed). The source's jam dand day-ay sajaay (punishment by Death's club) is set aside per wellbeing rules; the retained teaching is that pretending and grasping tie us in knots and wear us down — the harm is intrinsic, not an external punishment. Setting them down, we walk lighter.

A Question to Sit With

What's one "false face" or bit of grasping you could set down to feel lighter today?
