Don't Force Your Freedom; Let Yourself Be Held

ਮਨ ਕਰਹਲਾ ਵਡਭਾਗੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਏਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥
man karhalaa vadbhaagee-aa har ayk nadar nihaal.
O very fortunate camel-like mind, with one Glance of Grace from the Lord, you shall be enraptured.
ਆਪਿ ਛਡਾਏ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੪॥
aap chhadaa-ay chhutee-ai satgur charan samaal. ||4||
If the Lord Himself saves you, then you shall be saved. Dwell upon the Feet of the True Guru. ||4||

In plain words

O so-fortunate mind, one kind glance of grace, and you light up completely.

You do not have to free yourself all alone by force. When you let yourself be held -- when you rest your attention on the teaching -- the freeing happens on its own.

You do not have to force your own freedom -- let yourself be held, and it comes.
The deeper layer

The key turn here is aap chhadaa-ay chhutee-ai -- "if He Himself frees you, you are freed." This is the grace principle rendered exactly: liberation is not a self-help project of gritted effort; it is being released, receiving what is already offered. Ek nadar nihaal -- a single Glance of Grace and the soul is nihaal, blissfully full. And grace is never a prize for good behavior; it is described as already turned toward you, waiting for you to stop blocking it.

A Question to Sit With

What might it feel like to stop struggling and simply let yourself be helped?
