Verse 8 of 9

The One Lacks Nothing, Yet Wears Countless Forms

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਊਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਾਹੂ ਬਾਤ ॥
jaa kai oon naahee kaahoo baat.
He is not lacking in anything.
ਏਕਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਅਨੇਕਹਿ ਭਾਤਿ ॥
aykeh aap anaykeh bhaat.
He Himself is One, although He appears in so many forms.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
jaa kee darisat ho-ay sadaa nihaal.
By His Glance of Grace, you shall be happy forever.
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ॥੭॥
man mayray kar taa kee ghaal. ||7||
So work for Him, O my mind. ||7||

In plain words

The One lacks nothing at all. That One is single and whole, yet shows up in countless forms.

That One's kind glance leaves you glad forever. So work for that One, O my mind.

The One lacks nothing -- single and whole, yet wearing countless forms; work for that One, and its glance leaves you glad forever.
The deeper layer

The One is complete and lacks nothing, yet shows up in countless forms.

Jaa kai oon naahee kaahoo baat — the One who lacks nothing at all. Then comes the whole vision in a few words. Aykeh aap anaykeh bhaat — One in itself, yet in many, many forms. This is Ik Onkar, the One who became everything there is. Think of the ocean. It is one ocean, yet it shows up as endless waves. Each wave looks different, but it is all the same water.

That One's darisat, the kind glance of grace, leaves the soul sadaa nihaal, glad forever. So the verse says kar taa kee ghaal — do the work of that One. Work for the One who is whole and everywhere.

A Question to Sit With

If one reality wears countless faces, whose face have you seen it in lately?
