Take Good Words In and Your Own Turn Sweet

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਰਸਨ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
gur kai bachan sun rasan vakhaanee.
I listen to the Guru's Word, and chant it with my tongue.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
gur kirpaa tay amrit mayree banee. ||2||
By Guru's Grace, my speech is like nectar. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I listen closely to the teaching and I speak it out loud with my own voice. And when I am open to grace, the words that come out of me feel sweet — like nectar, something that heals and gladdens whoever hears it.

When you take good words deeply in, the words that come back out of you turn sweet.
The deeper layer

Deep listening (sun, close kin to suniai) and speaking (rasan vakhaanee, "recite with the tongue") are paired: taking in and giving out. Amrit banee — "nectar-speech" — is the promise that a person filled with the teaching becomes a source of sweetness for others. Note the positive framing: recitation is a gift, never mere repetition.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever heard someone say something so kind it felt like it healed you a little?
