ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪੁ ॥
gur kai bachan miti-aa mayraa aap.
Through the Guru's Word, my selfishness and conceit have been removed.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਇਆ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਡ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥੩॥
gur kee da-i-aa tay mayraa vad partaap. ||3||
Through the Guru's kindness, I have obtained glorious greatness. ||3||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When the teaching reached me, my selfishness quietly melted — that tight little feeling of "me first, me most." And in its place came a real greatness, the kind that grows from kindness, not from pushing others down.
Real greatness is what grows once the small, grabby self quietly melts away.
Miti-aa mayraa aap — "my self-ness was erased." Aap here is the ego-knot, haumai: the illusion of being a separate, self-important center. The verse pairs its dissolving with vad partaap, "great glory" — but glory that arrives through da-i-aa (the Guru's kindness), so it is the opposite of ego. Ego is treated as something that gently melts in warmth, not a crime to be punished.
