The Best Love Is the Kind You Didn't Earn

ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇਓ ਅਪਨਾ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
aapay laa-i-o apnaa pi-aar.
He Himself has blessed me with His Love.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਕਰੀ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
sadaa sadaa tis gur ka-o karee namaskaar. ||7||
Forever and ever, I humbly bow to the Guru. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

All on its own, that guidance filled me with love — I didn't have to earn it. So again and again, always and forever, I bow my head in thanks.

The best love is the kind you didn't have to earn — it was simply given.
The deeper layer

This one says the best love is the kind you never had to earn.

Aapay laa-i-o apnaa pi-aar — "He Himself filled me with His love." Pi-aar is love. It arrives as grace, as a gift from the Guru's side. Nobody earned it.

The answer to that gift is namaskaar, the bow. Sadaa sadaa means "forever and ever."

Think of a parent's hug on a hard day. You didn't do anything to earn it. You just say thank you. The bow is thanks, not payment. Grace is received, never bought.

A Question to Sit With

When has love come to you freely, before you'd done anything to deserve it?
