The Deepest Wish: Just to See the One You Love

ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰੇ ਕੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਦੇਹੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਓ ॥੭॥
nirgunee-aaray kee bayntee dayh daras har raa-i-o. ||7||
I am worthless - I offer this prayer, O my Lord King: "Please, grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan."||7||

In plain words

With empty hands I make my one small request: let me simply see You — let me catch sight of the One I love.

Sometimes the deepest wish is the simplest: just to see the one you love.
The deeper layer

This one says that the deepest wish is simply to see the One you love.

Nirgunee-aaray kee bayntee — the prayer of one with no merit to show. As earlier in the shabad, this is coming with empty hands. Dayh daras har raa-i-o — O Sovereign One, grant me Your daras, the sight of You.

The whole longing narrows down to one humble wish. Not a reward. Not even a rescue. Just to see the Beloved. Think of a child waiting at the window for a parent to come home. They don't want a present. They just want to see that face. That is devotion at its purest: wanting only to be near.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small thing you'd ask for if you could ask for only one?
