Verse 9 of 9

Simply Arriving at the Door Is Enough

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਤੁਹਾਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਆਇਓ ॥੮॥੨॥੧੪॥
naanak saran tuhaaree thaakur sayvak du-aarai aa-i-o. ||8||2||14||
Nanak has come to Your Sanctuary, O my Lord and Master; Your servant has come to Your Door. ||8||2||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

So here I am, my Master, come to You for shelter.

Your servant has arrived at Your door, the door of the One who welcomes.

Simply arriving at the door, ready to be welcomed, is enough.
The deeper layer

This is the closing verse. It says that simply arriving at the door is enough.

Naanak saran tuhaaree thaakur — Nanak says, O Master, I am in Your shelter. Sayvak du-aarai aa-i-o — Your servant has come to Your door.

The shabad ends where songs of refuge end: at the doorstep, having arrived. Think of coming home after a long trip and seeing the porch light on. The one who came empty-handed is not turned away. They stand at the door, welcome.

A Question to Sit With

Where is a 'door' you feel you can always come to and be let in?
